Description

Pergamum is an ancient Greek city which is occupied by the modern town of Bergama (the province of Izmir). Most of the monuments and buildings in Pergamum which were constructed of high-quality white marble in the finest Hellenistic style date back to 197-159 BC and Pergamum was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation.

Pergamum has 3 main parts such as Acropolis, Lower City and Asklepion. Acropolis is at the top of a hill overlooking the small town of Bergama and the view from the top is great. It is the highest, oldest and arguably most beautiful section of Pergamum.

There are reconstructed columns from the Greek and the Roman periods and a huge sloping theatre overlooking the valley in acropolis. The Theater of Pergamum is one of the steepest theaters in the world and had a capacity of 10,000 people.

Asklepion has beautiful remains of a famous medical school that apparently focused on treating mental patients and it was more like a modern spa than a hospital. The library in Pergamum was certainly one of the largest collections of written material in the ancient world and it is supposed to have rivaled that of Alexandria in Egypt.

Today much of Pergamum is on display in Berlin, Germany but Turkish government is trying to get it back from Germany bringing the issue to the international court.
