History of Didim

Didim, located in the Aegean region, is affiliated with Aydın province. It is one of the important tourism centers of our country.

Didim, which has long and very clean beaches, also hosts many local and foreign tourist guests due to its climatic conditions, natural beauty and vegetation. There are even people from abroad who liked Didim very much and settled in Didim. Due to the Mediterranean climate, traveling to Didim is very enjoyable not only in summers but also in other seasons as it is warm.

According to 2016 TUIK data, 77,164 people live in Didim, which has a surface area of 402 square kilometers. Didim's history dates back to ancient times. The first traces of settlement go back to 8000 BC. Didim, where the Cretans, Mycenaeans and Achaeans ruled, was later taken over by the Romans, Byzantines and Persians. After the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, the Turks took over this region on the borders of Caria. Although it fell into the hands of Byzantium again after the 1st Crusades, Didim was included in the Menteşe Principality with the establishment of the Menteşe Principality in the Caria region in 1261. In 1413, it came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire again. There was an earthquake in this region in the 14th century, and for this reason it was greatly damaged, and then it continued its existence as a Greek village for a long time. This region, which was named Yoran and Yeronda during the Ottoman period, was used as a settlement for immigrants coming from Greek villages after the 1924 Treaty of Lausanne. After the earthquake in 1955, the settlement in Yoran, called Hisar, was moved to Yenihisar together with the disaster residences. This region, which was used as a village until 1967, became a district under the name of Yenihisar in 1991 due to its very high tourism potential in the 1980s. In 1999, the name of Didymaion Dangelen Yenihisar district changed to Didim. This region has hosted many civilizations due to its location.

Places to visit in Didim

Apollon temple

Didim is definitely one of the places to visit. Everything necessary for the temple of Apollo, located in the ancient city of Didyma, to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage list has been done by the ministry. It is one of the important historical buildings that has survived from the Roman and ancient Greek times to the present day. It is also the 3rd temple of Apollo in the world.

Priene ancient city

It is one of the ancient cities very close to Didim. Transportation is very simple. It is an example of old city architecture. This ancient city, located near Güllübahçe village, was built by the Ionians on the slopes of Mykale Mountain. This ancient city, which is located in the inner part due to the alluviums brought by the Menderes River, was one of the port cities located by the sea when it was first built. The house of Alexander the Great, the temple of Athena, the Agora, the temple of Zeus, the Gymnasium and the Ancient Theater should definitely be visited.

Theater of Milet

It is an ancient theater that has existed since the Roman period. This theater, which is 150 meters long, was built by Marcus Avrellius, the emperor of that period. While the tenth part of the theater was allocated to state officials, public meetings were held here. This building, which had a seating capacity of 5000 people in the Hellenistic period, was revised during the Roman period and increased to 15 thousand people. The theater also has breathtaking acoustics

Miletus Museum

If you want to learn the history of Didim better, you can visit the Miletus Museum located in the ancient city. It is a museum where historical artifacts found as a result of excavations are exhibited. It opened its doors to museum visitors in 1973. Later, it closed its doors to visitors for the safety of life and property. The museum, which was opened again in its new building in 2011, consists of two sections.

Historical artifacts found as a result of excavations are exhibited both inside and in the garden of the museum. Sarcophagi, columns and inscriptions are exhibited in the garden of the museum, and the ruins of the Ancient City of Miletus, the Temple of Apollo and the Ancient City of Priene are exhibited inside the building.

Altinkum Beach

It is one of the most popular beaches in Turkey. At the same time, the sea is very clear and clean. For this reason, it has a lot of visitors. Due to its location, the season starts earlier compared to other beaches. It is a unique beach with a Blue Flag certificate, which is swimmable for 7 months, including May and November. It is suitable for many water sports. Transportation is very simple, you can go very easily with local minibuses or your own car. At the same time, thanks to the marina located inside, excursions to the surrounding bays are organized with tour boats.

Akbuk

It is the choice of those who want to enjoy nature. There are 3 different beaches in Akbük, which is 23 km away from the city center. Akbük, one of the first choices of those who love nature and hiking, is also suitable for angling and all kinds of water sports.

Handle Island

This island, which is described as a balcony extending to the sea, was formed as a result of a volcanic explosion in the Aegean Sea in the 1500s BC, and you can still see the remains of the explosion when you visit Akbük. It is one of the must-see places when you go to Akbük. It is known that the first settlement dates back to the 6th century BC. You can reach this island by walking across the sea. We recommend you to watch the unique view of this island, which has been declared a protected area by the Ministry.

Tavsanburnu Natural Park

You can easily camp and set up a tent in this park, which is surrounded by the sea. It is also a camping area with unique nature that you can visit on a daily basis. There are also places in the nature park, which is 6 km away from Didim, where you can meet your personal needs such as markets, showers, toilets, etc.

Bafa Lake

This lake, also known as a bird paradise, is 16 km away from Didim. You can reach there by minibus or your personal vehicle. The size of this lake, which goes into the Menteşe Mountains, is 60 km2. It was converted into a nature park in 1989 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey.

Akkoy

You can easily reach this village, which is approximately 17 km away from Didim, thanks to minibuses departing from the city center. You can visit stone houses from Greek and Ottoman architecture, and buy fresh village products from the organic village market held every Thursday.
